Medicare & Reimbursement

Customer Support 24/7

You can call anytime of the day, any day of the week at 1-800-348-8100.

Medicare benefits, insurance coverage and reimbursement can be very confusing for your patients. It is often difficult for them to figure out which diabetes care products are covered. Your patients may turn to you for answers. This information provides you with answers to their questions and to some of the questions you may have.

What products does Medicare cover?

If your patients are receiving Medicare Part B benefits, they can be reimbursed for most of your costs. This applies to whether they use insulin or not.

These diabetes care products from Bayer are covered under the Medicare Benefits:

  • CONTOUR® Blood Glucose Monitoring System
  • BREEZE®2 Blood Glucose Monitoring System
  • BREEZE® Blood Glucose Monitoring System
  • CONTOUR® Blood Glucose Test Strips
  • BREEZE®2 Blood Glucose Test Strips
  • ELITE®/XL Blood Glucose Test Strips
  • Control Solutions
  • Meter replacement batteries
  • MICROLET® Adjustable Lancing Device
  • MICROLET® VACULANCE® Lancing Device
  • MICROLET® Lancets (100s)

How much do my patients pay?

If you prescribe blood glucose testing supplies for your patients, Medicare will reimburse them either 80% of the Medicare-approved amount or 80% of the retail price, whichever is lower. This means that once the annual "Part B" deductible is paid, your patients pay the other 20%.

If they have supplemental or secondary insurance, they may pay even less than the 20% of out-of-pocket costs.

Many pharmacies and medical equipment suppliers will take care of all the Medicare paperwork and billing submissions for your patients. Please describe this service to them so they know to ask about it before buying any products.

What are the Medicare reimbursement guidelines?

Product For insulin treated patients For non-insulin treated patients
Bayer Blood Glucose Monitoring Systems 1 every 5 years 1 every 5 years
Bayer Diabetes Test Strips 100 per month 100 every 3 months
MICROLET® Adjustable Lancing Device 1 every year 1 every 6 months
MICROLET® VACULANCE® Lancing Device 1 every year 1 every 6 months
MICROLET® Lancets 100 per month 100 every 3 months

Important note: A physician’s order is required for Medicare reimbursement. If you recommend that a patient should test more often than the guidelines allow, you can authorize that patient to get more products which are reimbursed by Medicare. The prescription will need to authorize the number of times a day your patient should be testing and the reasons why you recommend more testing.

How do I get Bayer diabetes testing products?

When completing a prescription, remember to specify "Do Not Substitute" in a manner that will be respected by pharmacies. That way you ensure your patients receive genuine quality Bayer products.

How do my patients get Bayer diabetes testing products?

Patients should be able to find Bayer self-monitoring products at their local pharmacy, hospital or clinic pharmacy, or at a medical equipment supplier. However, if they need help finding Bayer self-test products, they can simply call the toll-free Customer Service helpline at 1-800-348-8100 and the operator will notify them of a nearby supplier.
