Lancing Devices

Lancing should be quick, easy and as pain free as possible. Bayer has developed two lancing devices with features that will help ease your discomfort and give you added control. Learn more about the lancing devices offered by Bayer:

MICROLET® Adjustable Lancing Device

More Control = Less Pain

  • Less painful for your fingertips because the lancet has a small diameter and there's less vibration.
  • Lets you choose from five lancing depths – shallower lancing means less pain.
  • Added control lets you get the smallest blood drop needed.
  • Easy-to-use large buttons and bumpy surfaces help if you have problems with your eyesight or hands.
  • Won a Business Week award for best design.
  • Optional clear endcap for use with the CONTOUR® meter (only) for alternate site testing.

Before you lance your fingertip with the MICROLET® Adjustable Lancing Device, you need to load a short lancet and choose an appropriate lancing depth from the five settings which are available. Then, you are ready to lance. When you're done, you remove the lancet.

Did you know...

Bayer lancing devices make the testing process easier and less painful. The MICROLET® Adjustable Lancing Device gives you more control over lancing depths and the MICROLET® VACULANCE® testing device enables you to use alternative testing sites.

Learn more about how to use a MICROLET® Adjustable Lancing Device:

How to load

  1. Remove the lancing device's end cap by gently snapping it from top to bottom.
  2. Take a short lancet and turn (but do not remove) its protective cap a 1/4 of a turn.
  3. Firmly push the lancet straight into the device's lancet holder.
  4. After you feel or hear a click, continue pushing until the lancet comes to a complete stop.
  5. Remove the lancet's protective cap, saving it for when you remove the lancet later on.
  6. Replace the device's adjustable end cap with the flat surface facing up.
The device is ready to lance.

How to choose a lancing depth

  • Choose a shallow depth for softer-than-average skin, a middle depth for average skin and a deeper depth for harder-than-average or callused skin.
  • To make a deeper puncture and get a larger drop of blood, turn the device's adjustable dial so that the line matches up with a picture of a large blood drop.
  • To make a shallower puncture and get a smaller drop of blood, turn the device's adjustable dial so that the line matches up with a picture of a small blood drop.

How to lance

  1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water.
  2. Rinse your hands and completely dry them.
  3. Without touching the area you wish to puncture, massage your finger and hand by stroking down towards the puncture site.
  4. Place the lancing device's adjustable end cap firmly against the puncture site.
  5. Without moving the finger you want to puncture or the lancing device, push the device's blue release button. The more pressure you apply, the deeper the lance will be.
  6. Wait a few seconds and then stroke down the finger towards the puncture site to form a drop of blood. Do not squeeze around the puncture site.
  7. Apply the drop of blood to a glucose test strip or test sensor, following the instructions which come with your test strips or test sensors.
  8. Wipe the puncture site with a dry, clean facial tissue.
  9. Put pressure on the puncture site until the bleeding stops.

How to use load

  1. Remove the lancing device's end cap by gently pulling it.

How to choose a lancing depth and area

To make a shallower puncture, match a shorter line on the lancing device's end cap with the arrow on the device.

To make a deeper puncture and get a larger drop of blood, match a longer line on the lancing device's end cap with the arrow on the device.

It's a good idea to talk to your doctor about the best area of your body for you to lance. Your should choose a soft, fleshy area of skin, free from hair and visible veins.

A few possible areas are:

  • the fleshy portion of the palm between the wrist and the little finger;
  • the underside of the forearm;
  • the abdomen; and
  • the outer thigh.

How to lance

  1. Wash the area you wish to puncture with soap and warm water.
  2. Rinse the area and dry it thoroughly.
  3. Place the entire edge of the lancing device's end cap in contact with your skin for an airtight seal.
  4. Push the plunger down until it comes to a complete stop.
  5. While using the end cap to keep pressure on your skin, slowly release the plunger.
  6. Continue to hold the end cap against your skin to keep the seal. Your skin should begin to slightly bulge up into the end cap.
  7. When a good blood drop has formed, press the plunger 3/4 of the way down to release the seal and then remove the end cap from your skin. If you fail to fully release the seal, the blood drop will splatter.
